In my 12 years as a technology journalist, the topics I cover have never been more interesting — or more important — than they are right now. With every tech development big or small, I wonder: how does this impact our society, culture, and human experiences, for better or for worse?
I started asking these questions about AI in 2014 when I first began covering the technology, which at the time was still a niche research pursuit. Now that AI has morphed into a global race to develop and proliferate increasingly advanced AI systems throughout every aspect of society, these questions are incredibly pressing. All of us, together, asking them and considering what type of world we want to live in, who gets to decide, and who gets to benefit from AI will be what shapes the future. Nothing about AI is inevitable.
At the same time, I’ve felt I’ve had fewer places to connect and share my stories with people interested in exploring these same questions. Twitter was that place (RIP). I’ve turned to LinkedIn, but I don’t need to tell you it’s not the best forum (why is practically every post about em dashes?). I’ve also been distancing myself from algorithmic feeds overall in both my professional and personal lives. That’s why I’m starting this newsletter.
I have a long history with newsletters, from launching one for Everytown for Gun Safety in 2020 to authoring Fortune’s popular Eye on AI newsletter throughout these initial years of the new AI boom. Plus several other technology newsletters in between. I also get most of my news from newsletters. I just love them.
In Sage Loves Tech, I’ll take you behind the scenes of my world covering tech and AI. I’ll share extras from my latest stories, opportunities to connect with me on topics I’m researching, what I’m reading (and what reporting from around the industry I think you shouldn’t miss!), as well as other fun and hopefully insightful stuff. The best part? It’s totally free for the foreseeable future.
I’ll still be publishing in various publications, but this is where you can keep up with everything I'm working on in one place.
Thanks for reading!
